Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ's):

Do I need a rental car when visiting Martha’s Vineyard?
We strongly encourage visitors to rent a vehicle (Not just because we are in the business). The island is much larger than people think and to experience the Island “On your own schedule” a rental car is the only way to go. Bus schedules are restricting and cab rides are very expensive (it is difficult to get into a cab without spending less than $25). It is costly and difficult to get your own car on the ferry. Our convenient locations make it simple, fast and economical to rent a vehicle.

How Does Insurance work?
In Massachusetts, your personal car insurance follows you. Your policy becomes the primary coverage. Most people have a deductible on their policy; you can elect to purchase our Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) that covers you up to your deductible.

What are your hours of operation?
We are open 7 days a week from 8am to 6pm EST. If you require an after hours pick-up, please call our office to arrange. In most cases, we are happy to provide that service.

What is the minimum age to rent?
23 years old, a major credit card and a valid driver’s license are required.

What are some common restrictions when renting a vehicle from A-A Island Auto Rental?
There is No Smoking in our vehicles. We do not allow pets in our vehicles. (In the event that a pet does go on the vehicle, the owner is responsible for pet hair removal).

Can the Jeeps go on the beach?
On Martha’s Vineyard, over sand beach permits are not given to the car rental companies. Therefore you can drive to the beach, just not on the beach.

Can we take your vehicles off-island?
We do not permit our rental vehicles to leave the island.

Where Should I go?
Tour busses on Martha’s Vineyard drive in a circle around the island in 2 hours, with a 30 minute stop. During the 2 hours of driving, they talk you through the sites and sounds of the island. The 30 minute stop is either at the Gay Head Cliffs to see how pretty they are and buy a souvenir or in Edgartown to do some downtown shopping.

Or you could rent a car: “A-A Island Auto Rental 3 hour tour”

Pick up a car at either ferry terminal or let us pick you up at the airport or your hotel. From there, the possibilities are endless. A day tripper renting a car cruises the island in 3.5 to 4 hours. Time depends on shopping and eating at all possible stops, not just Gay Head or Edgartown.

Let’s say you pick your car up at the Vineyard Haven office after arriving on the Steamship. If you were to leave the office and head up-island, your first stop could be Menemsha.

Menemsha is the last fishing village on the island. It has the freshest possible seafood, straight from the ocean. Stop at Larson’s Fish Market and pick up a bite to eat. Jaws fans know Menemsha as “Amity Island.” Who knows, you just might see him out there!

From Menemsha, take a quick trip over to Aquinnah. Aquinnah was once called “Gay Head” and is known for the stunning Gay Head Cliffs. One of the 5 lighthouses of Martha’s Vineyard is visible from the lookout area. At this point, you’ll want to stop and get an ice cream sandwich at Dreamcatcher Snacks. They use fresh baked cookies and they are amazing.

After taking in the beauty that Aquinnah has to offer, possibly walking Moshup Beach, head up South Road. South Road will take you to Edgartown-West Tisbury Road. If the name of the road doesn’t say enough, you’ll end up in Edgartown.

Edgartown is a celebrity hot spot. You never know whom you’ll run into. They try to keep a low profile and MV is the place to do it. Islanders tend to leave the celebs alone, but if you’re really, really, really nice, you may get one to pose for a picture.

Edgartown is also where people do the majority of their shopping. There are art galleries, jewelry stores, clothing stores, and much more right on Main Street. (For those Jaws fans out there, the big parade after Jaws was taken down was on Main Street.)

For those of you lighthouse seekers: If you were to drive to the end of Main St and take a left on Water Street, you will see the second lighthouse after the Aquinnah lighthouse.

The On-Time Ferry to Chappaquiddick is also in Edgartown. You could throw a rock to Chappy, but it is still necessary to take a ferry. Cross over the infamous Dyke Bridge and head to the Mytoi Gardens. After a quick walk through the garden, you could take a 45-minute boat ride around Cape Pogue and see the third lighthouse on the tip. (Day trippers tend to skip going to Chappy, it usually depends on the line for the ferry.)
Leave Edgartown on Beach Road. This will take you along State Beach.

Beach Road turns into Seaview Ave once you hit Oak Bluffs. (PLEASE NOTE: LOCALS HATE WHEN OAK BLUFFS IS CALLED “OAKS BLUFF”) The Ginger Bread houses are the star attraction of Oak Bluffs. The “Camp Meeting Association Camp Ground” was originally tents and is therefore still called a campground, even though it is filled with houses. In the middle of the campground is The Tabernacle, which was originally used as a Methodist Church but is now a popular picnic area and bandstand.

The oldest merry-go-round in the country is right in the middle of Oak Bluffs. The Flying Horses carousel still runs and even has an arcade. This is the most popular spot for the kids.

Oak Bluffs harbor is filled with all different boats and yachts. In mid-July, ESPN holds the Monster Shark Tournament weigh-in on the harbor.

Those of you touring the lighthouses can find the fourth lighthouse on the East Chop, just around the corner from the marina. You could take East Chop Drive toward Vineyard Haven to get back to the beginning.

Finally, you’re back in Vineyard Haven. If you’re chasing those lighthouses, just drive up Main St to see the fifth and final lighthouse. Otherwise, drop the car off and walk around Vineyard Haven.

If you started elsewhere, park on Main St and wonder. You could try to get on Plum TV, the local MV TV Station. It’s located in the Mansion House above the Spa and next to the Inn. Bunch of Grapes Bookstore has some amazing books written on or about Martha’s Vineyard.

Black Dog Bakery, Tavern, and General Store are across the street from our Vineyard Haven office; most people’s visit isn’t complete without some BD Gear.

All this can be done in just a day. Come, rent a car, and see the sights of Martha’s Vineyard.
